Walkerville Walking Tour This Saturday June 22 To Celebrate Architect Albert Kahn

The Rosati Group proudly announces the completion of the restoration of the historic Strathcona Building in Walkerville.

To celebrate this achievement, the Strathcona Building will be the first recipient of the Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation’s historic bronze plaque. This event marks the inauguration of the Foundation’s plaque program, which honors verified Albert Kahn-designed buildings.

Born in Germany in 1869, Kahn was an industrial architect and planner who became best known for his designs of American automobile factories.

Kahn’s father brought his family to the United States in 1881. Kahn had little schooling but was taken on as a student by George D. Mason, a leading Michigan architect. After working with various Detroit architects, Kahn established his own firm in 1902 which developed into one of the largest in architectural history. In his time, Kahn was considered the world’s foremost industrial architect and the “father of modern factory design.”

Kahn also played a significant role in the design and construction of Walkerville’s finest buildings. He was responsible for many fine commercial structures that remain in Walkerville, including the Town Hall (1904), the Bank of Commerce (1906), the Strathcona Block (1907), and many grand private residences, the most famous being Willistead Manor (1904). He also designed the entire Ford Motor Company of Canada complex in Ford City.

Kahn died in Detroit in 1942.

To celebrate the life Albert Kahn and his contributions to Windsor Walkerville, the public is invited to participate in a walking tour of the area exploring his architectural legacy which will take place this Saturday June 22 from 9:30 am until 12:00 pm.  The walk will be led by expert guide, Jake Rondot.

Ticket holders are asked to meet in the parking lot at 1969 Wyandotte Street East.

The plaque unveiling ceremony will take place at 11:30 am on June 22, 2024, in front of the Strathcona Building.
