Since its first public appearance in 1876, the RCMP Musical Ride has played a prominent role in the policing organization.

In 1939, the RCMP launched its breeding program when Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan, officially started breeding these famous black horses. The farm moved to Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan, in 1942, before moving again in 1968 to its present location in Pakenham, Ontario.

Today, the RCMP Musical Ride is one the largest licensed Hanoverian breeders in Canada. Newborns spend the first three years of their lives at the Pakenham breeding farm, growing and developing before moving on to the world-famous Musical Ride.

Each year, the RCMP host the annual “Name the Foal” contest.  Last year, over 3,100 entries were received, with more than 200 from schools.  Some of the winning names included: Windsor, Wales, Winnie, Warrant, Wynn, Willow and Wasabi.

This year, the contest will run from April 8 to 26. Children aged 14 years and younger, along with school classes from across Canada, are once again encouraged to submit their best names for the newborn horses. This year, suggested names must start with the letter “A.”

Starting April 8, you can submit your entry by visiting: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/musical-ride/name-the-foal-contest
