E.L.K. Energy Warns of Winter Storm Watch

E.L.K. Energy has reported that a Winter Storm Watch will be in place over the next few days. There may potentially be significant precipitation and strong damaging winds.

To ensure that you’re prepared for the risk of an outage and safety hazards, E.L.K. has provided some  suggestions and information.

Preparing Before a Storm:

  • Have an emergency family plan. You want everyone to know where the safest enclosed space in the house is in case of a storm.
  • Store emergency supplies and emergency contact list in this location.

Emergency Supply Kit:

  • batteries
  • blankets
  • first aid kit and other medical supplies
  • cell phone
  • prescriptions
  • money
  • 2 litres of water per person
  • dried and canned food
  • manual can openers

If a Storm is on the Way:

  • Charge cell phones
  • Plug electronics into surge protectors
  • Otherwise electronics should be unplugged
  • Bring outdoor items that could be storm hazards inside.

During a Storm:

  • Report a hydro outage at 519-776-5291
  • Flashlights are better than candles
  • Stay inside and away from doors and windows
  • Keep fridges and freezers closed as much as possible in an outage

After the Storm

  • Inspect your home and property for damage
  • When you plug in electronics, don’t do them all at once to prevent a power surge
  • Report any fallen power lines to E.L.K. at 519-776-5291 and emergency services immediately
  • Document any damage to home or property for insurance purposes
