Spotlight On Business: Mitchell Bookkeeping Services

Ivy-Mikelle Mitchell and her daughter

Mitchell Bookkeeping Services was launched in July 2022 by business owner, Ivy-Mikelle Mitchell.  A series of health issues led Ivy-Mikelle down the path to setting up her own business in order to find the work flexibility she needed and to build a better life for her and her daughter.

The Kingsville Times spoke with Ivy-Mikelle to find out more about Mitchell Bookkeeping Services and what’s behind her drive to succeed.

Kingsville Times:
What was your motivation for starting your business?

Ivy-Mikelle Mitchell:
This is a long story, but to summarize it, I went through some bad luck and health issues which left me with a cane and in a wheelchair. It took me about a year of physical therapy, chiropractic treatments and a workout routine, and I was not only able to walk independently again, but I went back to work!

Unfortunately, I learned quickly that I require flexibility. My days of working 9-5 in an office setting were over. In all honesty, it was my daughter who gave me the motivation. She’s an amazing young lady with a huge heart, and she deserved a better life than the one we were living. I opened Mitchell Bookkeeping Services to provide a better life for my daughter.

KT:
What advice would you give to others who might be considering starting a business? What challenges did you face?  What support did you receive?

I-M M:
Research! You may know your field, skill, etc., but owning a business is a whole other ball game. I knew from the start that I would struggle when it comes to marketing and networking, so I reached out to the Windsor-Essex Small Business and Entrepreneurship Centre for help and guidance.

They were very helpful assisting me with a proposal letter, business plan, and webinars to help me build and design my website. They referred me to Digital Main Street for guidance with my website, as well.

More importantly, don’t give up. There will be times, especially in the first few months of starting a business where you’ll feel overwhelmed, stressed, frustrated or all three.

Remember why you started your business and keep pushing. Reach out to your community, look for mentors, services, etc., but never give up. (Never give up is my own personal motto. I have it on my leg permanently to remind me every day!)

KT:
Who are your target clients?

I-M M:
My target clients are small and startup businesses. Startup businesses often require assistance staying in compliance with Provincial, Municipal and Federal laws, as well as guidance through the do’s and don’ts of bookkeeping for businesses. Owners of small businesses are often wearing every hat of their company, with bookkeeping more often than not being the most time-consuming task.

Mitchell Bookkeeping Services operates as an extension of our clients’ staff. I want my clients to be able to focus on what matters — profit and growth. I’m here for my clients to provide support for their businesses.

I don’t want them to think of costs when they have questions.  For that reason, each service package we offer comes with unlimited support.

KT:
How would you describe your services?

I-M M:
Mitchell Bookkeeping Services offers both remote and onsite bookkeeping and payroll services. We have both QuickBooks Online and Sage 50 Accounting software available for our clients. Any way I can be there for my clients, I’m there. Our services are professional, accurate, reliable, flexible and affordable!

KT:
What is your business motto?

I-M M:
The skills you need. The service you deserve.

KT:
What are your plans for business growth?  New services that clients can look out for?

I-M M:
In the new year, we will be offering personal tax preparation services to individuals.
