Spotlight On Business: Digital Voodoo Media

Video created by Digital Voodoo Media

For businesses looking for ways to improve the effectiveness of their online advertising campaign, look no further. Digital Voodoo Media, located right here in Kingsville, is ready to launch you into the realm of online video advertising.

Originally established in 1998 as Tracker Productions in Banff, Alberta, Digital Voodoo Media was renamed and transformed by owner Les McDonald in 2018.

The Kingsville Times spoke with business owner Les McDonald to find out about the origins of his company as well as the business ethos behind Digital Voodoo Media.

Kingsville Times:
What was the motivation for starting your business?

Les McDonald:
Originally when we opened in Banff, the inspiration was to create and market Canadian Rockies Travel Videos. This expanded to travel videos on the West Coast of Canada and the East Coast of Canada.

Our YouTube Channel for Tracker Productions is a lifestyle travel channel now with nearly 9000 subscribers and over 5 million hits and counting! When we moved to Kingsville in 2018, I established Digital Voodoo Media, a Kingsville-based digital media company with a focus on using social media platforms and video for advertising.

KT:
How would you describe your services?

LM:
Digital Voodoo Media is a Kingsville-based full service digital media production company with a focus on using social media for powerful and trackable advertising that really connects.

KT:
Who are your target clients?

LM:
My target clients are any businesses that want to promote their products or services online using video. I’ve produced videos for some great local businesses like the Banded Goose, Beachcomber Hot Tubs, a Windsor car dealership, and even a local solar light post cap company.

KT:
What is your business motto?

LM:
How you do ONE thing, is how you do EVERYTHING. I believe every detail deserves 100%.

KT:
What do your clients say about your business?

LM:
I’ve been fortunate to have had amazing feedback from my clients. My friends at Beachcomber, Volkswagen of Windsor, Banded Goose and more have said they found me to be extremely professional, produce great results, and that I make it EASY for them.

KT:
What are your plans for business growth?

LM:
My plans for future business growth are to keep doing what I’m doing, and hopefully, as word of mouth spreads throughout our local businesses, I will have more opportunities to create relationships and deliver exceptional results to my customers.

KT:
Why do you think people should hire you?

LM:
I think the biggest reason someone would hire me, and the reason I have so many repeat customers, is that I take the time to listen to my customers, and become personally invested in their businesses so I tell their story with passion.

KT:
How has COVID affected your business and what have you done to COVID-proof it?

LM:
COVID has certainly made my business more challenging but it’s created opportunities for me to re-evaluate my approach. I’m fortunate that I work at home a lot and I’m finding that now more than ever, people are seeing the need to connect with potential customers digitally.

Many people have less money so I have to use my experience to streamline my services and create value for the budgets my customers can handle, while still delivering exceptional products.

KT:
What advice would you give to others who might be considering starting a business?

LM:
If I could give advice it would be this: Find something you are passionate about. Really passionate about! Then, do the research and the work to build a solid business plan.

I had created and opened a New Orleans Inspired BBQ Pub in Squamish called the Copper Coil back in 2015. The restaurant was a huge success, and continues to be a local hit with the new owners. But, the main reason it was successful is because I had painstakingly created a detailed and exhaustive business plan.

Oh, and if possible, find a mentor in the same business field to guide you. You’d be surprised how many business owners would be willing to do this.
