Vet Wrap: Our Pets and COVID

These certainly are unprecedented times. Our pets would undoubtedly agree.

The direct impact our pets are having on us and inversely the direct impact we are having on them in this climate is incredibly interesting. Our companion animals are providing a huge amount of emotional support during these difficult times. The health benefits of pet ownership are well documented and undeniable (1) – this has never more obvious than now.

They keep us active, they listen and they challenge us. Of course, this is true to varying degrees … The comic relief provided by Mabel and Olive has lifted spirits around the globe, while the popular meme of the cat looking in a microscope: “cats trying to find a cure, so humans can go back to work” generally summarizes the sentiment felt by house cats near and far.

We are certainly finding solace in the company of our new co-workers. However, veterinarians are contemplating and predicting some of the health concerns we may see increase in the coming months. Obesity in the pet population is already rampant. (2) Unfortunately, extra “love” sometimes equates to extra pounds. While the “COVID-19 pounds” is a problem many people are now facing, we are already noticing the trickle-down effect in dogs and cats.

A surge in behavioural problems is also anticipated. “Pandemic puppies,” as many have lovingly dubbed them, have been behind on vaccinations and poorly socialized. As they miss the opportunity to go out into the world during their peak learning phase, as is unavoidable in isolation, fear of the unfamiliar may dominate their lives. (3) Finally, as we transition back to work, separation anxiety which can be a serious health concern, may surface with the abrupt change in routine.

They share our spaces and perceive far more than we are often aware. Let’s be cognizant of how this may be impacting our companions and consider gradual changes whenever possible.

Check in to Vet Wrap for more in a few weeks. My hope is that this platform will provide some insight into the vet life: a glimpse into our profession, small business ownership, of course some health tips for your pet, and other general topics related to our furry family members.

Finally, I won’t speak to the ever-evolving status of COVID cases (4) in dogs, cats (5), tigers, and mink. For this, there is no better source than Dr. Scott Weese (6), epidemiologist extraordinaire, and author of the Worms & Germs Blog. If you have a pet, or are interested in zoonosis in general, you should follow his take on all the latest news.
