Point Pelee National Park Festival Of Birds Kicks Off Today

Point Pelee National Park’s Annual Festival of Birds kicks off on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 and once again the park is expecting a record number of birders from around the world to visit the area over the next 20 days.

The Park is considered to be one of the best inland locations to observe bird migration.  Its location on major migratory flyways and on the north shore of Lake Erie makes it a migrant trap — a place that attracts a wide diversity of species in a very small area.  More than 390 species of birds have been recorded in the Point Pelee birding area.

This years’s calendar of events is packed with activities including hikes and talks dedicated to savannah restoration, wildflower walks, birding hikes and the popular 100-species birdwatching challenge.

Birding hikes are by registration and cost $35 per person.  Experienced hike leaders are available for a variety of tours.

In the morning, tours depart from the Visitor Centre and focus on Songbirds. Afternoon hikes begin at the Northwest Beach and catch up with migrating songbirds later in the day.  Twilight hikes explore the DeLaurier Trail with the chance to view the courtship display of the American Woodcock.

The Friends of Point Pelee (FOPP) play a key supporting role during the Festival.  As in past years, they will be outside the Visitor Centre from 7 am to 2 pm selling baked goods, barbequed food and other menu items.

This year, payment can be made with debit and credit cards as well as cash.  For visitors who need help with directions or have specific questions, members of FOPP will also be located inside the Visitor Centre at the Nature Nook store to lend a helping hand.
