A striking new mural now welcomes students and staff inside the library of Erie Migration District School – Secondary. Offering more than just visual appeal, it tells a story of legacy, memory, and community connection.
Titled Connected Paths and spanning 48″ x 163″, the mural was created after many hours of brainstorming conversations between Principal Sara Balsdon and Visual Arts Teacher Meg Simon.
The piece joins the legacies of Harrow District High School, Kingsville District High School and Migration Hall, together with Erie Migration District School – Secondary, and reflects the connected paths that unite their communities.
The artwork draws inspiration from the 1964 mosaic mural by artist Ann Fines, which was originally displayed at Kingsville District High School.
For many in the community, the Fines’ mural represents more than history—it evokes personal memories. One resident shared their wish that the original mural could have been moved, recalling time spent eating lunch, studying, and socializing beneath it at Kingsville District High School.
Due to its age and fragile condition, the original piece could not be relocated to the new school. “I know how much this original mural means to the community,” said Simon. “We wanted to incorporate it into our building. This piece came together from these thoughts.”
Connected Paths is a modern digital reinterpretation that honours the original while reimagining it for a new generation. Completed in January 2026, the design took more than 30 hours of digital work and was financed by a local, government-funded organisation, True Kingsville.
The project also drew on the contributions of many staff members including Madi Gale, Paul Johnson, Chad Findlay, Michelle Gursoy, Jane Murray, and Jocelyn Blair. Others assisted with researching the original mural’s origins, helping to confirm Ann Fines as the artist and 1964 as its creation date.
Once finalized, the new mural was printed on aluminum by Speed Print in Leamington and installed over the March Break period. Its permanent home in the school library ensures it will be seen daily by students, staff members, and visitors alike.
By situating the mural in the heart of the school, where students gather, learn, and connect, Erie Migration District School – Secondary has created a living tribute—one that ensures the stories of the past will continue to inspire future generations.
