Celebrating Restoration Milestones For The Detroit River

Join the Detroit River Canadian Cleanup (DRCC) at their 14th Annual Detroit River Evening to celebrate restoration milestones for the Detroit River.

The event will take place on June 25, 2025 from 6pm to 8pm at the Windsor Yacht Club (9000 Riverside Drive East, Windsor, Ontario, Canada N8S 1H1) or virtually via Microsoft Teams (link to join meeting provided once registered).

The Detroit River Evening is a free, public event to highlight the coordinated efforts to improve the Detroit River and remove it from the list of Great Lakes’ Areas of Concern.

During the event you will learn about some of the current research and restoration projects aimed at protecting, restoring, and enhancing the Detroit River ecosystem.

Updates will include a presentation from Weston Hillier from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and Amber Falkner from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, discussing the planned sediment remediation efforts on the U.S. side of the river.

Dr. Ken Drouillard from the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER), will provide a presentation discussing the impacts of the U.S. sediment remediation work on Canadian fish consumption advisories. We will also release the DRCC’s annual report for 2024-2025.

“The Detroit River Evening offers an opportunity for anyone interested in the environmental health of the river to come out and learn about all the work being done by our partners,” said Jackie Serran, Detroit River Canadian Cleanup Remedial Action Plan Coordinator.

“There has been a lot of progress towards improving the health of the Detroit River and we are looking forward to updating everyone on our work.”

Everyone is welcome to come and learn more about what the DRCC partnership is doing for the Detroit River and its watershed.

From its role in facilitating the industrialization of Windsor and Detroit to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and its designation as an Area of Concern, the Detroit River has a rich and vibrant story to tell. The Detroit River has served an important role in the history of the Windsor-Detroit area and is one of the busiest waterways in the world; connecting Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron to the St. Lawrence Seaway. The River is designated an American Heritage River and a Canadian Heritage River, the only river to have this dual designation.

When the Windsor-Detroit area underwent rapid industrialization at the turn of the 20th century, the Detroit River became notoriously polluted. These environmental issues have been identified as being related to, or the cause of, the impairment of several beneficial uses. The 1970s and 1980s saw the development of a massive conservation effort aimed at cleaning up the Detroit River.

The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA) between Canada and the United States, first signed in 1972, commits both countries to protect and restore the Great Lakes Ecosystem. The Detroit River Canadian Cleanup implements the Remedial Action Plan on behalf of a community-based partnership between the government (federal, provincial, municipal), local industries, researchers, environmental organizations, and citizens working together to protect, restore, and enhance the Detroit River ecosystem.
