Lighting By-Law For Commercial Signs Revoked By Council

During last evening’s Town Council meeting at the Unico Community Centre, Mayor Dennis Rogers presented a notice of motion to revoke a by-law prohibiting the lighting of external commercial signs between the hours of 11pm and 7am.

The by-law, which went into effect in August of last year with final approval of the wording passing several months later in November 2023, was originally put in place to address unnecessary light pollution within the Town.

Recently, the Mayor suggested that the commercial lighting by-law has had negative financial implications on some small businesses in town that have had to pay for new signs to promote their businesses.

During last evening’s meeting, it was confirmed that the by-law was largely effective and 95% of businesses have been compliant.

The lighting by-law remains in effect but will no longer be specific to businesses.

Citizens who have an issue with nuisance lighting can report their concerns to by-law enforcement by using the “Submit A Request” form on the By-Law Enforcement page of the Town’s website.
