1950s Mortar Round Removed From Road In Leamington

On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., members from the Leamington Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), were called to Deer Run Road between Mersea Roads 19 and 21 in the Municipality of Leamington.

A passerby contacted police after they observed a metal object in the middle of the road. Officers arrived on scene and closed Deer Run Road as a precaution.

OPP contacted the Department of National Defence Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit. Members from the Canadian Forces Base Borden arrived and removed the ordnance without incident.

The item was described as a mortar round and estimated to date back to the early 1950s.

·        Note the location and leave the area

·        Call 911 or local police
