Government Delivers New Grocery Rebate to 11 Million Canadians

As of May 2023, inflation in Canada has fallen to 3.4 per cent—down from 4.4 per cent in April, and from a high of 8.1 per cent last June. Among G7 countries, inflation is lower only in Japan by a mere 0.2 percentage points.

However, even with inflation falling from its peak last year, the rising cost of groceries means too many Canadians struggle to feed themselves and their families.

This week, the Federal Government announced that 11 million low- and modest-income Canadians and families will begin receiving their new, one-time Grocery Rebate.

This targeted inflation relief for vulnerable Canadians provides for the following:

  • eligible couples with two children up to an extra $467;
  • eligible single Canadians without children up to an extra $234; and
  • seniors with an extra $225, on average.

The Grocery Rebate payments are being delivered to eligible Canadians by direct deposit or cheque through the Canada Revenue Agency starting this week.
