Early Spring Predicted by Wiarton Willie

Good news! Wiarton Willie didn’t see his shadow today, predicting an early spring.

Willie is Ontario’s weather forecaster on Groundhog Day. People tired of winter wait with anticipation and hope every year on February 2 for his verdict about the coming spring. Willie’s report came in an official announcement at 8:07 a.m. this morning, after he’d shared it with Garry Michi, mayor of South Bruce Peninsula.

“Willie didn’t see his shadow, so we’re going to have an early spring,” said Mayor Michi.

For the past 67 years on February 2, Wiarton Willie has made his predictions. If he sees his shadow we’re supposed to prepare for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, we are to expect an early spring.

Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia and Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania have both predicted six more weeks of winter. Let’s hope Wiarton Willie made the right call.
