In Focus: Change Your Angle, Frame Your Subject

In this five-part series, academic, retired teacher and multimedia artist Diane J Sanderson shares tips for improving your photography skills. This week’s instalment focuses on two simple techniques that are sure to take your photos to the next level.

CHANGE YOUR ANGLE

Change Your Angle

Changing the angle of your camera allows you to see everyday things differently.  Use a high or low level as opposed to the usual eye level shot in order to take your photography to an artistic level.

Subject: Tree

Whether using a regular camera or your phone camera, give this technique a try!

FRAME YOUR SUBJECT

A Frame Within A Frame

Make use of natural of manmade elements to frame your subject and to soften the perimeter.  You are essentially adding an inner frame to the photo.  Fallen log in foreground, large trees and overhanging branches serve to frame the area of light being used as subject.

Subject: Light rays cascading through the canopy

With autumn behind us and winter just around the corner, the change is weather offers a perfect opportunity to get out into nature and try these new photography skills.

  1. I especially like your use of “leading lines”, eg: tree trunks, open sky and foliage. This effectively draws the viewers eye to your subject, in your “Chang Your Angle”.
Looking forward to more tips in the series.
