The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Elgin County Detachment has closed a large portion of the Highway 401.

On December 23, 2022, Elgin County OPP was required to close the Eastbound and Westbound lanes of Highway 401 from Tilbury to Colonel Talbot Road after responding to numerous collisions.

At this time, the full extent of the number of vehicles involved is unconfirmed.

One individual has been transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Of the other individuals involved, only minor injuries have been reported.

The Highway will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time.

The OPP is urging members of the public to avoid travelling on the roadways unless necessary.
