Earth Day Tree Planting Celebration Takes Place on April 24

Can you spare some time to plant some trees this weekend? If you can, please don’t forget your shovel.

Essex Region Conservation Authority will once again be hosting the Earth Day Tree Planting Celebration after a two year hiatus. This year the event will take place on Sunday, April 24 at the green space along the Ganatchio Trail in Windsor.

Parking will be available at the Riverside Kiwanis Park/Pump Track parking lot, McHugh Park parking lot and various public parking lots along Riverside Drive East. A map of Ganatchio trail is available on Google Maps by clicking here.

Participants are asked to use the the Ganatchio Trail to arrive at the Earth Day site. And, in a slight change to this year’s event, participants are being asked to pre-register for one of three planting shifts of one hour each, allowing staff and volunteers to safely manage crowds. Planters can opt to help out at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or at 1 p.m.

Green teams (15 participants or more in a planting team) will be recognized with a team photograph at the start of their planting shift. It’s expected that each participant will plant between three and five trees.

This year, more than 2300 trees will be planted thanks to the generous sponsorship of Enwin Utilities, Trees Canada, LCBO and CUPE 543.

Participants are reminded to use masks in areas where they are not able to maintain 2 meters of distance from other planters.
