Pelee Island

Over The Lake: Farmers Market and Theatre Production Return to Pelee

Pelee Island is known for some unusual spaces and historical holdovers from yesteryear. Did you know that the Island also has an acoustically perfect natural limestone amphitheatre? Exposed natural limestone shale lines a defunct quarry and provides the backdrop for an eclectic art, music and spoken word series known as Stone & Sky.

The weekly series has been put on hold again for 2021 due to COVID-19. But a weekly farmers market will take place every Saturday 10 a.m.- 1 p.m., starting June 19 and running through September 25.

The market features fresh organic produce, preserves, local artisans’ wares, and of course, the Commie Cafe with crowd favourite “pay-what-you-can” espresso!

Look for the “Pelee Quarry” sign just east of the Pelee Island Winery Pavilion on East West Road.  Colourful umbrellas are strung across the entrance that trails about 20 feet down into the quarry.

Though the weekly series has been set aside for now, the Stone & Sky annual theatre production returns with a presentation of Letters to Grace August 14 and 15. Performances are perfectly timed at 5:30 p.m. to accommodate the 8 p.m. ferry sailings.

Stemming from the book “Amazing Grace,” Letters to Grace is a work for 13 actors and 8 musicians and is produced by Windsor Feminist Theatre.  The script was written by Windsor’s Poet Laureate Emeritus Marty Gervais, and the original contemporary classical music is composed by Jeff Smallman.  Directed by Patricia Fell, and music direction by Nadine DeLeury.

Letters to Grace is the story of a handful of courageous young nursing grads from Grace Hospital, Windsor, told specifically through their letters dispatched from makeshift hospital tents at the front lines in France during World War II, from leprosy clinics in India, and from remote South African missions.”
– Marty Gervais

The piece ends with letters from two contemporary nurses working with Covid-19 patients. For more info, photos and videos, please go to Our next project: Letters to Grace
