Food for Thought: Mettawas Station Mediterranean Restaurant Review

Hello again friends, I’m back with another riveting restaurant review — or instalment of “Jo eats the food” — whichever you prefer. I think it’s important to be as fair and impartial as possible with these reviews. To that end, despite the fact that dining in was an option at the time of this review, and even though dining in is my preference, I ordered take-out food only.

Selfless. I know, I give and I give.

To business, then.  The establishment in the spotlight this time is the Mettawas Station Mediterranean Restaurant in Kingsville. Why this particular restaurant, you may ask? Firstly, because I found out it was located in the old train station. Soo cool.

Secondly, because I looked at the menu and it looked kinda fancy, and I felt like I was deserving of a treat of late. Ordinarily, a Dollar Store chocolate bar would suffice, but after the week I’ve had that wasn’t going to cut it. I needed something extra.

So, in the spirit of extra, I got to thinking perhaps a fancy dinner deserves a more fancy approach? With this in mind I struggled into my best pair of pleather leggings. Steve even got into the spirit, donning his dress ball cap, typically reserved for weddings or funerals.

I ordered online (insert laughter from anyone who knows me), and it was surprisingly easy. We headed out to grab our dinner, which the website indicated would be ready by 6:15.

I walked though the hobbit-looking front door (charming indeed!) at exactly 6:15, and was eating by exactly 6:17. A good beginning, to be sure.

I ordered the bruschetta to start. There were five healthy pieces of thick, soft, yet crispy bread laden with tomatoes and feta, with a single proud olive perched atop each piece.

I liked where this was heading.

I had rigatoni with cream sauce. It was delicious, and extremely more-ish. I stopped and re-started eating three times after I was already full. I made quite the show of putting the lid on the  container and pushing it away before finishing all of it. Don’t judge me.

Steve ordered the perch and chips, which he really enjoyed. The batter was light and thin, which is paramount for a smaller fish such as perch. Nobody wants a big ol’ bite of batter and air. It’s like opening a bag of chips that’s half empty before you even have any. Steve said the fries were good too.

Although my tummy was bursting, I decided I needed to soldier on for you, dear reader, and at least try the gluten-free vanilla bean cheesecake with raspberry topping I’d ordered.

Let me tell you something, it ate itself. It really did.

I don’t know how I found room for it, but Lord knows I’d come this far, and nobody likes a quitter. It was divine. Such a nice touch too, to find my name on the take-out container, thereby leaving no question as to ownership of said cheesecake.

This turned out to be unnecessary as we ate all the cheesecake too.

Overall, I’d say the food lived up to my expectations, and beyond. Shout out to Mettawas Station for being as delicious as I needed you to be, and for being a well-deserved treat. Shout out also to my elastic waistband, for holding the line.

Perhaps some day soon you will feel like you deserve a treat, something extra. In that event, I’d suggest you try the Mettawas Station Mediterranean Restaurant.
