Food for Thought: Kings Bake Shop Review

Hello again Friends. As I’ve mentioned, it was recently my birthday. I bring this up not as a plea for attention, accolades or gifts, (cash, however …) but rather as rationale for my next review. Because birthdays are meant to be all about wishes … and cake. Cake too.

My birthday this year was a muted affair. I had decided, due to this pandemic, to cancel the whole thing, in favour of postponement to a later date and venue, more befitting my becoming a “woman of a certain age.” (Whatever that entails — I didn’t get the pamphlet.) I was OK with the cancellation as I intend to make this birthday do-over spectacular.

Oh … and I’ve decided I’m not ageing any further until said birthday do-over occurs, however long it takes. I simply refuse.  I’ve got a ton of ideas, a good imagination, and the perseverance to make Steve make it happen.

In the meantime, this cancellation of my birthday led to some thought as to how to observe the day quietly in some small way. Nothing grandiose, but I couldn’t let such a milestone pass me by completely. I at least needed to make a wish.

Again, thinking about birthdays and wishes, leads to thinking about cake — more specifically one perfect cupcake. That I don’t intend to share, capable of ferrying my wish to the spirit realm, for fulfillment. One excellent cupcake that I can savour in the tub, listening to Pink Floyd, basking in enjoyment. Not too much to ask, I’d say.

I decided to try out Kings Bake Shop in Kingsville because there had been a lineup outside of there a few days before this, and who lines up for anything anymore? I figured this was the place. Thankfully when I went, there was no lineup.

I ordered myself a peanut butter Nutella cupcake — and yes before you ask, I got a blueberry lemon one for Steve too. I’m not a monster. Besides,  he’s gotta keep his strength up for party planning, don’t forget.

Firstly the cupcakes looked amazing, and were beautifully iced. I used to work ( briefly) decorating doughnuts years ago, and I know how hard it can be to be consistent. Sometimes … like … stuff happens … and it’s not always your fault.

Never mind that. What I’m saying is, the cupcakes looked beautiful and appetizing. Good job. Some people notice and appreciate things like that. Now to the most important part — the taste.

Mine was soft, creamy and peanut buttery, beautifully balanced and sweet, but not too sweet. A perfectly Wish- worthy treat. I didn’t try Steve’s but I could hear his “mmm’s” from the other room, so it’s safe to assume he enjoyed it!

Thank you to Kings Bake Shop in Kingsville for helping me celebrate my birthday with a beautiful treat that I richly deserved. I savoured my cupcake and made good use of my wish. Can’t tell you what I wished for — you know the rules.

Perhaps you’ve got a birthday coming up, and are in need of one perfect cupcake to wish upon. In that case I’d recommend Kings Bakeshop in Kingsville.
