Urban Poling Has Come to Kingsville

You may have seen people out walking on the street, with a pole in each hand. They look like they’re using ski poles, but they’re not schussing down the slopes. It’s more like cross-country skiing without the snow. Or the skis.

This activity goes by a few names. It’s been called urban poling, Nordic walking and sometimes it’s simply described as using walking poles. It’s a fairly new form of exercise in North America but it’s gaining many followers and supporters.

The Mayo Clinic recommends walking poles for a well-rounded workout. They’re a great tool for exercising your arms, chest, shoulders and upper back muscles by the simple act of walking.

According to  Dr. Agnes Coutinho, researcher, kinesiologist and professor  at University of Guelph-Humber, walking with urban poles is a better workout than just walking would be. It burns a higher amount of calories and works a greater number of muscles more intensely. It can improve blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure, cardiac issues, diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, and weight control.

Pole usage can help prevent falls while walking. It can be useful for people with COPD, fibromyalgia, and Parkinson’s disease.

Dr. Coutinho said that the University of Ottawa Heart Institute published research in 2013 finding that urban poling offers more benefits than standard cardiac rehabilitation methods. This is even said to be true for people who have had mild to moderate heart failure.

More people are urban poling around Kingsville. In the days of COVID-19, according to Urban Poling Instructor Marilyn Farnworth it’s a great way to social distance, get some fresh air and sunshine, and exercise, all at the same time.

“The unique strapless ergonomic handle design combined with the proper Rutlin Technique will help you reach your weight loss and fitness goals faster, easier and with less effort,”  Marilyn told the Kingsville Times.

Urban poling can be done solo if you prefer to work out on your own. If you are interested in learning more or attending a class you can contact Marilyn Farnworth at 519-733-6924 or email redfarnworth@aim.com for further details on classes commencing in September 2020.

“Classes will incorporate proper technique, warm ups and cool downs with the poles and stimulating walks outside,” Marilyn said. “Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, suntan lotion, and bring your water bottle. Urban poles will be supplied free of charge for the classes but will also be made available for sale.”
