Off the Shelf: More Than Books

Hello Kingsville! We are so excited to be able to join the Kingsville Times online! The last several months have been a challenge for us all. Our hope is that the Essex County Library can help by offering quality reading material, streaming TV shows, movies, documentaries and so much more. Each week we will share service updates, new title releases and educational resources. We think there will be something interesting for everyone.

Update on Library Services

The Province of Ontario announced that the communities of Windsor-Essex may move to a Stage 3 reopening and that Libraries may begin to expand their service offerings.

We are working to assess our sites in order to finalize plans that meet both provincial and local health guidelines. We ask for your patience as we complete this process so we may carefully move to a service that will best keep our staff and communities safe.

While we work towards reopening, the Essex County Library will continue to provide information and resource support through our online catalogue, direct staff support through phone assistance, curbside pick-up, and mail delivery of library materials.

Thank you for your patience! We’ve missed you and we look forward to welcoming you again as soon as we are able to do so safely!

We will share updates as they become available here and on our social media.

Kanopy

Kanopy launched late February and we want to spread the word about this excellent resource. Kanopy is an award-winning video streaming service providing access to more than 30,000 independent and documentary films—titles of unique social and cultural value from The Criterion Collection, Media Education Foundation, and thousands of independent filmmakers. New this month:

Miss Juneteenth

Turquoise Jones is a single mom who holds down a household, a rebellious teenager, and pretty much everything that goes down at Wayman’s BBQ & Lounge. Turquoise is also a bona fide beauty queen–she was once crowned Miss Juneteenth, a title commemorating the day slaves in Texas were freed–two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Life didn’t turn out as beautifully as the title promised, but Turquoise, determined to right her wrongs, is cultivating her daughter, Kai, to become Miss Juneteenth, even if Kai wants something else.

Capone

A ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Al “Fonzo” Capone (Tom Hardy) was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore. At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Capone’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.

Growing People

MA’O Organic Farms, in the historical marginalized rural community of Wai’anae, O’ahu, is the site of a groundbreaking youth leadership program that has impacted the lives of hundreds of Hawaiian youth. This short documentary provides an intimate look at the MA’O program through the stories of three of these youth, sisters Miki, U’ilani and Sheila Arasato.

Big Easy Express

Folk rock and bluegrass musicians Mumford & Sons, Old Crow Medicine show and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes travel together by train from San Francisco to New Orleans in the spring of 2011, on an epic journey to tour while playing music as bands did long ago.

Winner of the Best Long Form Music Video at the Grammy Awards.

New Fiction

Here are a few titles that we’re looking forward to for September. Remember, you can place holds on library materials and choose between curbside pick-up or mail delivery. Check out our webpage: www.essexcountylibrary.ca

All the Devils Are Here by Louise Penny

Canada’s favourite mystery writer Louise Penny is back as is Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home one night, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured. Is it an accident or a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life? A strange key sends Armand from the top of the Eiffel Tower, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. Secrets and danger are more imminent than was realized! ~ Photo of Louise Penny: Ian Crysler / CC BY-SA https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0

Indians on Vacation by Thomas King

A brilliant new novel from one of Canada’s foremost authors. Inspired by a handful of old postcards sent by Uncle Leroy nearly a hundred years earlier, Bird and Mimi attempt to trace Mimi’s long-lost uncle and the family medicine bundle he took with him to Europe. Witty, sly and poignant, this is the unforgettable tale of one couple’s holiday trip to Europe, where their wanderings through its famous capitals reveal a complicated history, both personal and political.

Midnight Library by Matt Haig

You know we have to recommend this one just because of the title! Between life and death there is a library. When Nora Seed finds herself in the Midnight Library, she has a chance to make things right. Up until now, her life has been full of misery and regret. She feels she has let everyone down, including herself. But things are about to change. The books in the library let Nora live as if she had done things differently. But you know that things won’t be as she imagined they’d be! She must answer the ultimate question: what is the best way to live?
