Green Heart Kitchen opened up their retail location in Kingsville in January of 2019. And since the outbreak of COVID-19, they have done their part in supporting our community. With the help of their dedicated partners, they have been able to continue offering their healthy meals and programs such as the Breakfast Program which is offered year-round at Kingsville Public School.
They have also developed new ways to support our community, for instance with the free Family Food Box Program for those in need, and the Health Heroes and Frontline Heroes programs that support our amazing local medical staff.
The Health Heroes Program, which came to life after Green Heart Kitchen partnered with Erie Shores Healthcare, focused on the Erie Shores Healthcare hospital staff. Members of the community could log on to the Green Heart Kitchen website and donate a meal, in thanks to those frontline workers who day after day risk their lives to keep our community safe.
In the two months that the program ran, Green Heart was able to deliver over 800 meals to Health Heroes, all thanks to the generosity of this amazing community. The program was so successful, in fact, that it was decided that these supportive efforts would be refocused on frontline workers in long-term care homes, thus initiating the Frontline Heroes Program.
While both programs supported frontline staff and ran quite similarly, donating to the Frontline Heroes program had an added bonus.
Hair-raising Fund-raising Event
Like most of us after being cut off from our hairdressers, Dennis Rogers, owner of Green Heart Kitchen, was in desperate need of a haircut. And so, a commitment was reached — four fundraising targets to hit, four potential haircuts for Dennis. The more money raised for frontline worker meals, the more ridiculous the cut.
Styles ranged from Dennis’ regular cut, Will Smith’s flat top in Fresh Prince, the “George Jefferson”, and last but not least, the Mr. T. And who was to have the honour of cutting, you ask? Well, let’s just say his wife, Haley, would be getting the last laugh here.
The fundraising was done over a two-week period and with every $10 donation providing meals to two frontline workers, the total grew closer and closer to the Mr. T cut.
The “Dennis” cut — surpassed!
The “Flat Top” cut — surpassed!
The “George Jefferson” cut — ACHIEVED!
At the end of the two-week fundraising event, Green Heart Kitchen was able to feed 200 frontline workers and Dennis received a full George Jefferson.
Green Heart Kitchen never ceases to amaze us with their commitment to keeping our community healthy. And while Dennis is the professional we all know and love, this haircut is truly amazing!
