Cedar Island Yacht Club: For the Love of Sailing

Cedar Island Yacht Club is Canada’s southernmost yacht club. We are a vibrant, fun sailing club located at 982 Heritage Road or 42.012N, 82.78W as sailors prefer to pinpoint our location.

The beautiful clubhouse sits in a park-like setting. We have 52 docks equipped with hydro and water. Our boats have easy access to Lake Erie through a well-maintained channel. Members can also enjoy the natural beauty of Cedar Creek by hopping on a kayak or paddle board.

CIYC Clubhouse

We strive to be a club for all ages and offer a number of programs. On Wednesday evenings, we have Club racing followed by a barbecue and socializing at the clubhouse.

Two regattas are hosted each year: the Maple Leaf Regatta in July and the Labour Day Regatta. Other clubs in the area are invited to race and enjoy dinner and an awards presentation. Other events offered are a Caribbean Day,  as well as cruises to Leamington, Pelee Island and Put-in-Bay.

We are passionate about our sport and enjoy introducing others to sailing through several programs.

A Canadian Yachting Association-approved Basic Cruising Learn to Sail keelboat program is available for adults.

Children ages 8 to 14 can learning about sailing through our Ontario Youth Sailing BOOM Program.

In the past, we offered IGSA (Island Girls’ Sailing Adventure) which is a program to introduce women to sailing. This has changed to social sailing on Mondays, where we invite friends to join us on the water followed by fellowship at the clubhouse.

Every year we participate in Explore the Shore.

Sailing is a fun, affordable sport. At Cedar Island Yacht Club, we offer full and social memberships. We are a not-for-profit organization and all members are expected to volunteer work hours to help run the club and keep it “ship shape”.

Sadly, COVID restrictions have shortened the season this year. We have had to cancel racing, regattas, and learn-to-sail programs. However, we are still out on the water cruising and socializing in a more limited way while maintaining social distancing.

Next year when things get back to normal, we encourage anyone who has ever thought they would love to sail to check us out!

I am so proud of the CIYC and very happy that the present membership is carrying on the original ideals of Community, Inclusion of local families, and staying true to the craft of Sailing and the volunteer , not for profit ideal.
