UMEI Community Players Return To Stage With The Wizard Of Oz

The UMEI Community Players are inviting Essex County audiences to follow the yellow brick road this February as they bring the beloved classic The Wizard of Oz to the UMEI stage. Presented by Tiessen Financial, this multi-generational community production promises heart, humour, and a powerful celebration of the arts.

After the highly successful return of the Community Players last year with The Sound of Music, which drew more than 1,500 audience members, momentum is strong. This year’s production builds on that success with a cast that truly reflects the community, ranging in age from five to seventy-five years old. Performers are from across Essex County, some stepping on stage for the first time and others returning with decades of theatrical experience.

“The most remarkable part of this show is the people,” says Director Jillian Suta. “This production represents months of dedication from an incredibly diverse and committed group of performers, musicians, painters, builders, and volunteers. It’s been a joy to see creativity and community spirit come together again on this stage.”

The cast brings fresh energy to a timeless story, with lead performers highlighting the joy of collaboration, nostalgia, and simply getting to be part of something meaningful. Many describe the experience as a chance to relive childhood memories, work alongside talented castmates, and contribute to a production that spans generations.

Music Director Alyssa Epp notes that the score plays a central role in connecting audiences to the story. “The music of The Wizard of Oz is instantly recognizable and deeply loved. Hearing it performed by such a wide range of voices has been incredibly special.”

Behind the scenes, the production has also marked a major step forward for UMEI’s arts programming. Thanks to generous sponsors and donors, including presenting sponsor Tiessen Financial, the school has installed a new sound system that will enhance this production and serve future concerts, performances, and community events for years to come. Technical Director Nick Driedger emphasizes that the upgrade represents a long-term investment in quality and accessibility for the arts.

Tiessen Financial’s presenting sponsorship reflects their continued commitment to UMEI, local education, and the arts. Organizers expressed deep gratitude for their leadership support, along with the many businesses, families, and individuals who have contributed to making the production possible.

Performances take place February 6, 7, 13, and 14 at 7:00 PM and February 8 and 15 at 2:00 PM, with matinee shows expected to be the most popular. Tickets are on sale now at umei.ca/communityplayers.

As audiences young and old settle into their seats, organizers hope the message of the show resonates clearly: there’s no place like community, and no place like the arts to bring it together.
