On Friday, October 17, local MPP Andrew Dowie met with the team at the Windsor Light Music Theatre (WLMT) to announce a $146,600 Capital grant they received from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky was also in attendance to celebrate the OTF grant, which represents a transformative investment into WLMT’s audio system.
“Windsor Light Music Theatre has been a vital cornerstone for Windsor’s arts community for decades,” said Andrew Dowie, MPP for Windsor–Tecumseh. “The Government of Ontario, through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, is proud to support bringing their high-quality arts and cultural experiences to the people of Windsor-Essex for many years to come.”
Awarded in June 2025, the grant will fund a significant upgrade to WLMT’s audio systems, namely the purchase of new microphones and audio equipment, dramatically improving the sound quality of their main stage productions at the Chrysler Theatre and their youth programming.
“I’m thrilled to see Windsor Light Music Theatre receive this important investment from the Ontario Trillium Foundation,” said Lisa Gretzky, MPP for Windsor West. “This $146,600 Capital grant will help ensure that this treasured local organization can continue delivering high-quality, live musical theatre by upgrading essential audio equipment. It’s an investment in our arts community, and in the cultural vibrancy of Windsor for years to come.”
The announcement was shared with members at WLMT’s Annual General meeting and is looking forward to implementing the new technology for its upcoming production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which will run from Friday, November 14th to Sunday, November 23rd.
“With enhanced audio technology, we’re not just upgrading equipment, we’re elevating the entire experience of live theatre in our region. Our mission has always been to bring the magic of Broadway to Windsor-Essex, and this support allows us to do that with even greater impact.” said Connie Farrer, President at Windsor Light Music Theatre.
“We’re proud to be part of a thriving arts community that fuels imagination, inspires connection, and drives economic vitality in the heart of our downtown. We’re incredibly grateful to OTF and the Ontario Government for this impactful grant.”
Founded in 1948 by Dr John H.L. Watson as the Windsor Light Opera Association, WLMT continues to be a cornerstone of the local arts scene with over 300 active volunteers. The organization has received numerous accolades, including a proclamation from the City of Windsor declaring March 29, 1988 as WLOA Day.
“This investment not only elevates the artistic experience for audiences across Windsor Essex who engage with one of our valued Chamber members, but it also contributes meaningfully to the revitalization of our downtown core, driving cultural vibrancy and generating economic impact.” said Ryan Donally, President/CEO of the Windsor Essex Chamber of Commerce.
“Windsor Light Music Theatre remains a shining example of how the arts enrich our community and foster local prosperity.”
The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Ontario government with a mission to build healthy and vibrant communities across the province. Last year, OTF invested nearly $105M into 732 community projects and multi-sector partnerships. Projects aim to enhance economic well-being, foster more active lifestyles, support child and youth development, provide spaces for people to come together and connect, and create a more sustainable environment.
