The geese are finely honing their V-formation flights overhead, reminding us to think about the Migration Festival. Are you aware of its newly featured event, The Great Migration Paint Out?
It’s the four-day Plein Air outdoor painting celebration where participating artists (both local and from away) set up their easels at different sites in our municipality during Kingsville’s Migration Festival. It also provides the opportunity for these artists to display and sell finished pieces as well as compete for big prizes.
Information about registering for this event can be found by visiting www.kingsville.ca or http://artssocietyofkingsville.ca. An entry fee is involved. Registration closes on October 14.
This community event has been organized by Layne and Elaine van Loo, two very talented local artists who have attended numerous plein air events held elsewhere, one of them recently in Elora.
The prize money is sponsored by the Kingsville Migration Festival, van Loos’ Kingfisher Studio and the Arts Society of Kingsville.
First prize is $1000, second is $500, and third is $250.
This photo on the left by the van Loos demonstrates one aspect of local spectacular beauty. Other themes include historical buildings, marinas, quaint farms, and sites showing Lake Erie.
Be sure to attend the display of art at the Grovedale Arts and Culture Centre at 103 Park Street by the lake. It will be on Sunday, Oct. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. It’s open to the public, and free of charge. COVID protocols will be in place.
Volunteers are needed at this event. Please call the town 519-733-2334.
Arlene Murphy’s Road Trip
Arlene Murphy has recently returned from another one of her art exploration missions in her rebuilt bus called Bessie. Although her initial objective to visit parts of Nova Scotia was thwarted by the Maritime bubble, she made the best of it by visiting parts of Quebec along the St. Lawrence River where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
Here are a few delectable images and one of her comments on Facebook — “Bessie and I bounced along the Gaspe today to this jewel of a spot. I may hunker down here for a few days.”

Watercolours with Ed Roach
Ed Roach of Sissy & Roche Fine Arts has recently posted a set of 12 videos of watercolour painting instruction, free of charge. The website is sissyandroche.com In a recent newsletter, Ed states:
“Learn to paint in watercolour on your own schedule. Go to our Sissy and Roche website and under ‘classes’ you’ll discover 12 free lessons. The great thing is that I’m able to offer these to you absolutely free….I’m anxious to hear your feedback, positive or negative. This is an opportunity for anyone to take my classes, especially if Covid-19 has kept you from venturing out. Don’t forget that Sissy & Roche has art kits to get you started.”

Thankful for the Arts
On the cusp of Thanksgiving, we are enriched by so many talented people who love to create their art right here. Remember to mark you calendar to visit the Grovedale Arts and Culture Centre. The show takes place from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, October 18.
Art in the Library
The Kingsville Public Library is open again. Visitors can enjoy a visit for 30 minutes at a time, due to a stay-safe policy. Presently, spectacular photography by Johnnie Dutton and unique yarn designs by Catherine Johnson are on the Art Wall for your viewing enjoyment.
Scavengers on Bicycles
Here’s an update for bike-riders to take part in a special scavenger hunt this weekend. Try to find the artists around town as they participate in the Great Migration Paint Out! Everything will be happening within the boundaries of the municipality of Kingsville — Albuna Road to the Arner Town Line, from Lake Erie to Road 8.
Collect four business cards from different artists to submit for a draw of an original painting by a local artist!
