Taking on a spring project that involves digging? April is Dig Safe Month—a good reminder to get locates that mark underground utility lines before you dig. It’s free and it’s the law. Without locates, you risk injury, property damage, natural gas service disruptions, costly repairs or legal action.
Landscaping, fencing and foundation work are still major causes of gas line damage. Contact Ontario One Call before you or your contractor starts digging.
What to do before you or a contractor digs
Follow these steps:
1. Request a locate through Ontario One Call.
2. Wait for buried lines to be marked.
3. Respect the marks and dig carefully.
4. Visit our website for more tips on safe digging.
Smell gas or think you hit a line?
Here’s what to do if you suspect a leak:
• Stop work immediately. Shut off all tools, machinery and equipment.
• Clear everyone from the area.
• Call 911 if you hear or smell gas escaping.
• Call the Enbridge Gas emergency number at 1-866-763-5427.
• If gas is leaking, do not try to stop it on your own.
