Lost Afghanistan Medal To Be Returned To Family Of Local Trooper

The General Campaign Star South West Asia medal for Afghanistan, awarded to the late Trooper Stefan George Jankowski, will be formally presented to his family on Sunday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 644, 1570 Marentette Avenue, Windsor, Ontario.

The medal will be presented by local veterans who served alongside Trooper Jankowski in Afghanistan.

Trooper Jankowski served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons during Task Force 3 09 in Afghanistan. He passed away in 2011 shortly after his release from the Canadian Armed Forces.

Following his death, his Afghanistan medal went missing. His family and his former fire team partner have searched for it for many years.

The medal was recently located out of province and is now being returned to Windsor.

Veterans who deployed on the same tour will be in attendance at this ceremony, along with community members, and elected officials.

This event reflects the bond between those who served and the community’s commitment to honouring its veterans. It also marks the return of a meaningful service medal to the family of a soldier who is remembered with respect.
