The Essex County OPP is reminding the public to always lock their vehicles after several overnight thefts were reported in the Town of Essex over the last few evenings.
Throughout the last week, Essex County OPP has responded to numerous reports of vehicle entries happening overnight. Primarily, it was reported that vehicles on Arthur Avenue, Fairview Avenue, and Wilson Avenue in the Town of Essex had been entered overnight, however, other areas in the county have also reported incidents.
To help prevent future thefts from vehicles, the Essex County OPP would like to remind everyone about the “Lock It or Lose It” campaign, a crime prevention program that reminds the public to lock their vehicles and to not leave any valuables or keys inside the vehicle. These steps will help reduce the motivation and likelihood of property crimes.
A few other simple tips to decrease the risk of being victimized are:
- Lock your doors
- Roll up your windows
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Keep your registration and proof of insurance in your wallet or purse, not in the glove box
- Pocket your keys
- At night or during extended parking periods, always park in a well-lit area
If you do suspect that your vehicle has been entered, please report it. You can now also file a report online at www.opp.ca.
If you have information on this event or any other crime activity in the area, contact the OPP at anytime at 1-888-310-1122 or if an emergency at 9-1-1.
