Students from the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board have exceeded provincial averages in seven of eight EQAO categories, according to the 2024-25 results from the annual assessment released by the Ministry of Education.
“The fact that our students have performed so consistently well is a testament to every one in our organization working together to support them,” said Emelda Byrne, Director of Education.
“Every year our senior administrators closely scrutinize our achievement data with an eye towards developing learning strategies that will help our students meet Ontario’s curriculum expectations. Based on these results, it’s plainly evident that our educators are successfully implementing those strategies.”
In Grade 3 and Grade 6 reading, writing and math EQAO assessments, WECDSB students exceeded provincial averages by anywhere from 5 to 9 percent.
In math, students in Grades 3 and 6 have demonstrated continual increases over the last four years.
In Grade 9 math, where WECDSB students have traditionally exceeded provincial averages, results showed a slight dip this year, with 57 per cent of students meeting the Ontario average, compared to a 58 per cent success rate provincially.
On the Grade 10 literacy (OSSLT) assessment, WECDSB students outperformed the rest of Ontario by 9 per cent.
“We are pleased with the results, however we continue to focus our attention and efforts in the area of mathematics,” said Executive Superintendent Melissa Farrand.
“It’s important to note that when examining cohort trend data rather than year-to-year, we’ve seen an increase in the number of Grade 9 students who met the mathematics standard compared to when they wrote the assessment in Grade 6. The percentage of students meeting the standard went from 54 to 57, which indicates their math learning is improving as they progress. We will continue to focus on supporting students so that they can make gains in this area.”
