This year, the Municipal Retirees Organization of Ontario (MROO) has awarded over $120,000 in student scholarships distributed to 40 exceptional students across the province.
The MROO scholarships support recipients in their post-secondary studies. All recipients are family members of current MROO members.
Scholarships are awarded in each of the nine zones across the province as well as a tenth award which covers the rest of the country.
Recipients are selected based on specific eligibility criteria including leadership skills, volunteer experience, and commitment to making a difference in their communities.
One student from Essex County was awarded a $3,000 scholarship to go towards their education in 2025-2026. From Cottam, Carina Thachuk is currently studying English Language and Literature at the University of Windsor.
Another student from Chatham-Kent (Dresden), Abby McGee was also awarded a MROO scholarship. Abby is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Lambton College.
Lucie Lombardo, Director of Zone 1 Chatham-Kent, Lambton, and Essex Counties explained the importance of the MROO student scholarship program.
“Now in its 19th year, the MROO scholarship program is an integral part of MROO’s mandate to give back to our members and communities across Ontario. We are so happy to support our future leaders through our annual student scholarship program. Congratulations and best of luck to Carina and Abby,” she said.
