Two Left Feet Productions MTL brings award-nominated solo show The Awkward Ballerina to Fringe Windsor
Written and performed by Kristin Govers and directed by TJ Dawe, The Awkward Ballerina is a true story about growing up with cerebral palsy and wanting to become a ballet dancer.
Funny and heartfelt, this solo play navigates past and present.
From bullies to first crushes, singing auditions to soccer games, Kristin shares her challenges and triumphs, ultimately reinventing her dream—and finding herself under a different kind of spotlight.
The show premiered at Festival St-Ambroise Fringe de Montréal in 2022 and had much success after its six performances, with nominations in two categories for the Frankie Awards (Best English Production and Most Promising Emerging Artist).
Two Left Feet Productions MTL went on to remount it at Salle Pauline-Julien in September 2022.
In January 2023, the show made its international debut at the Orlando Winter Mini-Fest, thanks to Beth Marshall Presents and The Inclusivity Project (TIP Company).
Shortly after, Govers translated the show into its French version alongside Suzanne Lalonde.
In June 2023, La ballerine maladroite made its way back to the stage at Festival St-Ambroise Fringe de Montréal.
The Awkward Ballerina sheds light on the realities of living with a disability and the impact of bullying.
Govers wrote the show as both an artist and a mom, hoping to spread awareness about cerebral palsy and to show her son that no matter what obstacles life throws our way, dreams are never impossible.
In addition to her work as a writer and performer, Govers is currently halfway through her studies with the Toronto Film School in Film and Television Writing, hoping to expand her creative pursuits.
A graduate of Montreal’s Concordia University with a BA in Literature and inspired by having taken TJ Dawe’s solo-show workshop, she continues to grow as an artist and storyteller who believes that everyone should get the chance to dance — even if it’s a little awkward.
