Lighting Nuisance Concerns Expected to Rise With Change in Season

The Town of Kingsville is committed to ensuring residents can enjoy their properties. Its Lighting and Odour Nuisance By-Law (By-Law 96-2020) requires every landowner or occupier to prevent light from plant cultivation from causing inconvenience to others by shining onto neighbouring properties or into the night sky.

As the days grow shorter, the Town expects to see more requests to investigate lighting nuisances. Our by-law enforcement officers rely on the public’s assistance to pinpoint violations. Please note that officers can only respond to violations by operators located within the municipality.

To submit a request to investigate, please email requests@kingsville.ca and provide details such as the address or greenhouse operator, the date and time of the occurrence, and the farm’s location. Photos are helpful but not necessary.

We appreciate the cooperation of farm owners as they work with our officers to locate and resolve issues. Most farms are already compliant and actively working to address system issues as they arise, such as faulty curtains.

In the event of a violation, officers may issue verbal or written orders to correct the issue, impose progressive set fines, or lay charges before the court. Our officers will exercise discretion when enforcing By-law 96-2020.

We appreciate everyone’s help upholding this by-law for a more peaceful and enjoyable community.

  1. The birds thank the town of Kingsville. Other animal life thanks the town of Kingsville. As a long time resident, I thank the town of Kingsville. There’s no reason for our night skies to be lit up as though we were living in Las Vegas.

Continue Kingsville’s legacy of being anti business.
