Art Scoop: Ann Ducharme Creates a Sanctuary

Meet Ann Ducharme, the present chairperson of the Arts Society of Kingsville who is also an outstanding artist. During the plunge into isolation required by the present pandemic, Ann created a sanctuary for herself in her art studio.

The following is her story:

I have been painting for as long as I can remember. My father completed “paint by number” pictures for a hobby. I would take his leftover paints and create my own works of art.

I am pleased to say I have displayed my art at the Carnegie Arts and Visitors Centre in Kingsville, the Gibson Gallery in Amherstburg, and recently at the Leamington Arts Centre.

My artwork has travelled to many faraway places, but the furthest I am aware of is Taiwan as a gift representing Canadian Art.

Many Canadian artists have inspired me along my journey. I admire the works of Robert Bateman, Christine Marshall, the Group of Seven, and Emily Carr. I  hold them in high esteem.

My favourite place to paint is in my art studio which is located in the lower level of my home.

This past year of required social isolation has provided me with endless amounts of uninterrupted time to explore painting styles and to apply my passion for creating beautiful artwork.

My studio has become my Dream Place. Here I have completed many paintings that are now on sale, not only in my studio in Oxley but also presently in galleries in Leamington and Kingsville this month.

You can find dates for these exhibitions at the end of this article.

My rural home is situated in a setting of wooded acreage and expansive gardens, both wild and tended, where inspirations for picture creation are easy to find.

I do experience “painter’s block” on occasion when I undertake new pieces. What do I do when I am stuck?

I paint trilliums. These beautiful wildflowers are almost second nature to me and help me regain my self-confidence, helping me to return to a challenging part of a painting.

I am a proud member of the Arts Society of Kingsville. I have found many like-minded and passionate artists in this organization who inspire and encourage one another, with me included.

If anyone is looking for a wonderful group of people to share the joy of art, this group is for you. Artists, artisans and art lovers are always welcome.

See information below about two galleries where Ann’s art is on display this month.

  2. Hi Ann
Your Kootenay Sunset painting immediatley caught my eye at the Craft Connection in Nelson and it’s now hanging in my living room in Vancouver. I was wondering about your connection to the Kootenays and if there is any other information you have about the painting?

Thank you and obviously, I love your work.
