Have Your Say: Should Kingsville Implement Municipal Accommodation Tax?

At its April 28, 2025 meeting, Kingsville Town Council received a presentation from Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) regarding implementing a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) in the region.

TWEPI advocates for all towns and municipalities in Essex County to adopt this initiative, which aims to generate a new revenue stream to enhance tourism infrastructure and marketing programs.

The MAT is a tax ranging from 4% to 6% imposed on short-term accommodation rentals for less than 30 days. This tax will apply to all lodging options and short term rentals, including hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, and other rentals.

The collected funds from the MAT are mandated to support activities that promote tourism, with half the funds remaining in Kingsville and half being handed over to TWEPI.

  1. What a great way to bring tourist dollars into our area. TAX them more. DUH

  2. If you’ve gone this far to ask our opinion, I’m pretty sure our opinion doesn’t matter and it’s already a done deal. Next you’re going to want to implement a tax on food and beverages like Niagara Falls.
