Essex County Library Launches its Cognitive Care Kit Initiative

Being diagnosed with dementia can be a life-changing event for an individual and their loved ones. As one experiences a decline in cognitive ability and memory it can be a challenge for care partners.

The Essex County Library is excited to announce its Cognitive Care Kit collection. These kits are designed to stimulate the brain and help support the skills and abilities of people living with early-, mid- and late-stage dementia.

Each kit contains an assortment of prepared activities, games, puzzles and worksheets that encourage social engagement and success with daily activities and are geared to adults who have cognitive impairments from a disease such as Alzheimer’s.

Cognitive Care Kits are based on recommendations from the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County, DementiAbility, Relish Dementia Activities and Products, CDS Boutique, all of which offer specialized activities and products for people living with dementia.

To get a kit:

  • Book a one-on-one session with library staff
  • Check outs are limited to 2 kits for a maximum 3 week period

Information sessions are scheduled throughout the month of November with Rosemary Fiss, Director of Programs with the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County. Library staff will also be hosting sessions in ECL branches across the county.

These sessions will highlight the kits, demonstrate how to work with the materials and provide opportunities for library patrons to schedule their one-on-one appointments.
