A free Nature Talk and Luncheon was held at the Pelee Island Legion Branch 403 on Monday, August 12. Cherie Dillen of the Pelee Island Butterfly Sanctuary and Teaching Garden was the speaker that morning.

It turned out to be another “sold out” event at the Pelee Island Legion! Cherie had an engaging and informative talk about the Pelee Island Butterfly Sanctuary, followed by a luncheon catered by Stonehouse 1891.

Stone House 1891

Stone House 1891 is a Pelee Island restaurant located near the West Dock.

The original Stone House was built in 1891 by Joe Lowe on the same site where it stands today facing Lake Erie.

Cherie is passionate about butterflies and takes great joy in sharing her enthusiasm with others.

The crowd that gathered for this event came away with a deeper understanding of moths and butterflies. Many left inspired to add more butterfly-friendly plants in their gardens.

Did you know?

Many people consider Queen Anne’s Lace to be an invasive weed, but it actually plays a vital role in the life of the Eastern Black Swallowtail.

This butterfly species relies on the plant for food and uses it as a host plant to lay eggs.

The Cecropia moth and other moth varieties have no mouths. This means that they spend their entire adult lives without a single meal. Their sole purpose is to mate.

Cecropia moth caterpillars are a crucial food source for songbirds.

These are just a few of the interesting facts that attendees of Monday’s Butterflies of Pelee Island Social learned from Cherie Dillen.
