UMEI Christian High School hosted its 8th annual Lightning Athletics Banquet on June 4. Athletic Director and Vice Principal Mr. Darcy Bults, who hosted and planned the event, was thrilled to bring the community together to recognize the athletic achievements of these student-athletes.
“For a small school, we run an outstanding athletics program,” said Bults, “and we are so proud of the determination, hard work and leadership our athletes have shown this year.
A highlight of the night was the keynote speaker, Ms. Emma Bedal, who shared about the importance of coachability and how this has impacted her life.
“Being coachable means I was a team player, I was driven and dedicated to improving my skills and my team and I was able to listen to others,” said Bedal. She then went to explain how this has impacted her career with Agriculture Canada.
The most prestigious award of the night was the Lightning Athletics Distinction Award, presented to Ben Recker, which celebrates athletic and academic achievement. His speech reflected on his experience as Lightning student-athlete.
“I have strived to lead by example, to motivate and support my teammates, and to contribute positively to our school community,” reflected Recker. “To me, being a student-athlete is not just about personal success but also about uplifting those around you to better your friends and teammates on and off the court.”
He also had a message for younger athletes.
“Achieving success in both academics and athletics is a challenging yet rewarding journey that requires dedication, discipline, and a clear vision. Embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, both in the classroom and on the court. Set goals for yourself and work towards them, remembering that success is built on perseverance and resilience.”
Many other awards were distributed, including MVP for each sport played and athletes of the year.
