Trinity United Church New California: A Country Sanctuary

Hi Everyone,

My name is Margaret Fittler and I’m a member of Trinity’s congregational family. We’re a country church located at 1005 Concession 2 West, N0P 2GO (corner of Concession 2 and the McCain Sideroad).

Throughout the stages of rural development, country churches have provided a calming sanctuary from the challenges of daily existence.

Whether supporting our early settlers as they tackled overwhelming odds, assisting people through the struggles of the depression, comforting those who experienced the loss of loved ones in the wars, or simply recognizing the contributions made to the community by multiple generations of local families — country churches were there to encourage, guide, and inspire.

With the increase of new people moving to Kingsville (Welcome!), we thought it might be interesting for you to learn some historical facts regarding at least our portion of the countryside which is northwest of Kingsville.

Through the contributions and support of our church members, we hope to give a little historical information with each issue. We’ll also provide a recipe from our church cookbooks and, when possible, a photo to enrich our stories. Of course, we’ll update you on any bazaars, plant sales, or dinners we’re planning.

We hope you enjoy the attached recipe and please read the information regarding our upcoming Roast Beef
dinner.

Until next time

God Bless!

A Country Sactuary: History Corner

Specifics provided by Bonnie Monminie – Kingsville Military Museum

The month of April has been designated to honor the memory of all those who fought and died at the battle of Vimy Ridge in WWI. According to an article in the Windsor Star, 9 April 2007, page 6:

In the early hours of April 9, 1917, in driving wind and sleet, four divisions of Canadian soldiers, fighting for the first time as a unified national force, fought heroically through a barrage of German fire and swept over the ridge that had eluded the British and the French. … The men who fought and died that day had uncommon courage but common names and histories. Most had emigrated to Canada or were born to European parents who had come here for a plot of land and a better life.

For our first historical article, we’d like to honor all the courageous men, women and families who sacrificed so much during such a horrific war. More specifically, we wish to pay homage to those from the Trinity church family who forfeited everything to save future generations from having to confront the evils that their world was being
challenged by.

Of special note: Thirteen members of one Trinity Sunday School class enlisted.

Gratefully, Arthur Lord who survived and returned to Kingsville. He received the Military Cross for bravery.

Although they did not return from the war, the following distinguished men will always be proudly remembered and respected by their church family for their ultimate sacrifice.

We remember and ask God to Bless the memories of:

Pte Charles White kia
Pte Arthur J. Spice kia

Pte Albert G Spice died of cerebrospinal fever in hospital
Pte Henry Chaffin died of shell gas poisoning

Pte Stanley Sarson kia

The names of Pte Albert G. Spice and Pte Stanley Sarson are recorded on the

Vimy Memorial.

Information about these soldiers can be found at Kingsville Military Museum

A Country Sactuary: Country Kitchen

This issue’s recipe was submitted to our church cookbook by Nancy Thorpe (Mrs. Stan Thorpe). Among other roles in the church, Nancy was the leader of the “Mission Circle Girls.” She loved to bake and would involve us girls in one of our group’s most anticipated and successful fund raisers – our yearly homemade doughnut sale.

Not only did we sell the doughnuts, but we also sold the “holes.” Sorry Timmies, but the Mission Circle Girls thought of it first.

Featherweight Breakfast Cake

4 tbsp. shortening, butter or margarine
1 egg
½ cup milk
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
½ cup sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
2 tbsp. sugar
½ tsp. cinnamon

  • Start your oven at 375 degrees or moderate
  • Grease an 8” square pan
  • Melt shortening, butter or margarine
  • Cool slightly and mix with egg and milk
  •  Sift dry ingredients together several times
  • Pour the mixture of liquid ingredients into the sifted dry ingredients
  • Stir only long enough to smooth out the lumps
  •  Pour batter into greased baking pan
