Kingsville — The Best Place to View the Eclipse in Essex County!

On Monday, April 8, 2024, there is a total solar eclipse, and Kingsville is on the path of totality, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for residents and visitors. The “path of totality” refers to the narrow track on the Earth’s surface where the Moon completely covers the Sun, resulting in sudden and complete darkness, the appearance of the Sun’s outer atmosphere (corona), and the visibility of stars and planets in the daytime sky.

The Town is holding an Eclipse Watch Party at the Grovedale Arts & Culture Centre and Mettawas Park, 103 Park Street, from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Enjoy live music by the Dan Woods Trio, brought to you by the Kingsville Music Society. You can also watch en plein air painting by local artists, participate in children’s activities, and indulge in refreshments for sale from the 2nd Kingsville Scouts.

We have a limited inventory of solar eclipse glasses to distribute at the event while supplies last. We also have a cache to give away in advance on a first-come-first-serve basis (maximum of four pairs per household, per visitor), at the following locations:

  • 2nd floor Special Events Office at the Kingsville Arena, 1741 Jasperson Drive – Out of stock
  • Grovedale Arts and Culture Centre, 103 Park Street, on March 28 at 7:00 pm
  • Ridgeview Park in Cottam, 124 Fox Street, on April 6 at 3:00 pm

The Kingsville Eclipse Watch Party is a great opportunity for friends, family, and neighbours to come together and witness a rare and awe-inspiring event. Whether you attend our event or view the eclipse from another location, please be mindful of your safety.

  • Use solar viewing glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standards. Regular sunglasses will not keep your eyes protected!
  • Be mindful of trespassing and traffic if you’re travelling to witness the eclipse; plan for traffic and crowded areas.
  • Ensure you properly equip your binoculars or camera. Your equipment should have a solar filter attached to the lens. Only look through the camera’s viewfinder at the Sun with proper protection.
  • Educate your kids about the dangers of looking directly at the Sun, and keep your pets inside!

You can find more information about the solar eclipse and Kingsville’s Eclipse Watch Party on our website.

Perhaps this article should also stress and warn people about the possible risks of looking directly at the sun during an eclipse—even with protective eyeglasses.

I shudder to think of the children in our area who could be seriously affected after this event.
