The Fraser Institute published the annual rankings of Ontario elementary schools today.
The rankings are the most easily accessible tool for parents to compare the academic performance of the province’s schools. They offer parents information they can’t easily get anywhere else, about how schools perform over time and how they compare to other schools.
The Report Card on Ontario’s Elementary Schools ranks 2975 public, Catholic, and independent schools based on nine academic indicators.
In Ontario, the elementary school ratings are based on provincewide test results in reading, writing, and math skills. These tests are written by all students in grade 3 and in grade 6.
The secondary school ratings are based on provincewide math test results written by all students in grade 9 and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) results.
Contrary to common misconceptions, the data suggest every school is capable of improvement regardless of type, location, and student characteristics.
