GECDSB Plans For Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024

A full solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8th.

The most intense effects of the phenomenon will be between 1:57 p.m. and 3:17 p.m. that day, which coincides with regular dismissal times at many schools.

Out of concern for student safety during that period of almost complete darkness all students of the Greater Essex County District School Board as well as the Windsor-Essex Catholic School Board will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m.

Student transportation will run, as usual, in the morning but buses will not be available at 1:00 p.m. Families will have to make alternative arrangements or pick up their child(ren) at 1:00 p.m.

The possibility of shifting a PA day to April 8th was considered but due to contractual obligations, previously scheduled commitments and issues with students transportation – which is shared among local school boards – that was not a workable solution.

Boards are collaborating with childcare providers to help determine their programming that day. Families should contact their childcare provider for information.
