Third Winter of Cold Water Swimming Begins for Joan Murray Barton

The Third Year Begins!

Here I go for a third winter of Cold Water Swimming. I can’t stress enough how great this activity is. I feel 20 years younger and at 78 that’s a very good thing!

There is evidence that Cold Water Swimming is catching on and that’s just fantastic news. There are several groups starting up here on the Bruce Peninsula.

I’ve mentored several girls, and they have in turn mentored others, and so this therapy continues to grow.

Apparently there are more studies being done, and I couldn’t be happier about that.

When I first experienced the effects of CWS three winters ago I thought — my goodness! This could help so many people.

When Tony took these pictures, the temperature of the water was 9.7C or 49.4F.

It was calm and sunny when I jumped into that H20. It was just fabulous!! I swam in that water for 10 glorious minutes.

Take it from a Kingsville girl

Now as you know, I’m from Kingsville so I’m very familiar with its geography, and you couldn’t be in a better location to practice this.

That’s why I keep touching base with you folks about it. Think about it and believe me — you won’t regret it if you decide to try Cold Water Swimming.

Having said that, be sure to get your doc’s approval and do your research before embarking on this practice! There are dangers attached to it and you need to know about cold shock and after drop to keep yourself safe.

How long to stay in?

Three minutes will give you the benefits and staying longer does not increase the benefits but will increase your chances of becoming hypothermic.

It is best to start this practice in the summer so your body can habituate to the cold.

If you have any questions you can email me at joanieb67@hotmail.com and I’d be happy to try and help.

Cheers from the Bruce,
