Art Scoop: Lorraine Johnson’s Creations Have a Touch of Magic

Artist Lorraine Johnson

Lorraine Johnson was born and raised in Windsor. A university communications executive, broadcaster, arts teacher and instructor, author and artist, she’s found that her career in the Arts took her to a number of far-flung and Canadian residences.

Her passion supporting the arts has included:

  • teaching art K-12 in a Texas rural school
  • opening the exclusively Canadian, Northern Exposure arts gallery and store in Windsor with partner, Kate Campeau
  • broadcasting host for CBC radio in Windsor, Saskatchewan and nationally
  • teaching creative writing in David Thompson University Centre in Nelson, BC
  • writing and publishing two Celtic mysticism books in New York and Europe
  • negotiating with Nelson city and provincial governments to, establish and fund the Kootenay School of the Arts
  • serving as senior executive in two universities’ communications/funding  departments in Nova Scotia and Manitoba.

Lorraine has initiated a new university and has established for Indigenous students in northern Manitoba, still operating today.

She served as a program and funding consultant to First Nations on the Prairies and in British Columbia, successfully winning billions of dollars in long-term annual funding for each and every BC Indigenous community.

In grade school, she was encouraged in her love of art when one of her large paintings of a cowboy was selected by the UN to tour the world in an exhibition for a year. Self-taught, she still loves to paint large to this day.

“I consider myself an intuitive, mixed media abstract artist with a touch of ancient magic. I believe some of the zen-like joy I experience while painting continues to reside in the energy of each of my creations.” ~ Lorraine Johnson

Lorraine is a member of the Arts Society of Kingsville

A great article about my friend Lorraine. She is indeed one accomplished woman as the list of her endeavours attests. She has seen and done so many things in her lifetime that she can be proud of. Her work with First Nations stands out among them. Her love of art and creating it truly sustains her.
