The Erie Situation is an award-winning feature length documentary that tells the story of how a global issue is impacting a local community. In 2014, the citizens of Toledo, Ohio were without running water for three days when a bloom of highly toxic algae entered the drinking water plant from Lake Erie.
This was a wake-up call that freshwater resources are at risk of becoming toxic.
The Erie Situation explores the confluence of science, public sentiment, politics, and the powerful farming lobby as Ohio wrestles with how to confront the drivers of toxic algae in one of the Great Lakes.
“With more than 11 million Canadians and Americans relying on Lake Erie for drinking water, the annual algae bloom threat not only puts those that rely on fresh healthy drinking water for day-to-day activities at risk, but also the plants and animals who call Lake Erie home,” said Paul Drca, the Detroit River Remedial Action Plan Coordinator.
“There are many actions people can take to protect our freshwater from runoff pollution to reduce Lake Erie algae blooms and improve its health overall. We hope to discuss calls to action at the film screening with the audience to inspire them to make a difference in their local watershed.”
Following the film, audience members will have the opportunity hear from a panel of experts on water quality and conservation, particularly focusing on Lake Erie and the Detroit River. The panel includes Dr. Katie Stammler from the Essex Region Conservation Authority, film Director David Ruck, and Kyle Davis from the Town of Lakeshore.
