Amherstburg Freedom Museum Celebrates Black History Month

February marks Black History Month across Canada and there’s no better place to take a deep dive into Windsor-Essex’s African-Canadian history than the Amherstburg Freedom Museum.

According to Museum Curator Mary-Katherine Whelan, if you’ve never been, you’re missing out.

“Founded in 1975 by local residents of Amherstburg, it tells the story of African-Canadians’ journey and contributions by preserving and presenting artifacts that educate and inspire. The museum offers tours and programs in an ideal setting to learn about this rich and diverse history through the touring of both historic buildings on site – the Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church and Taylor Log Cabin.”

This is a perfect opportunity to learn the stories about the history and contributions of this region’s African-Canadians. Staff are encouraged to bring along their pre-teen and teenage children as this is a wonderful chance to share this part of our local history with them as well.

“It is important to recognize Canada’s rich Black History, not just during February, but all year round. Last year, the national Black History Month theme was ‘February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day,” said Whelan.

“We echo that theme and encourage everyone to celebrate this significant history all year round because Black History does not just happen during the month of February; it is every day and in all aspects of Canada’s history. Let’s each help to learn, support, and share this very significant history.”

Black History Month honours the legacy of Black Canadians and the contributions they made in moving toward a more equitable society – and WRH thanks those who left a lasting legacy in our community.

The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. as well as Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for students and seniors or $30 for a family.
