Supply chain issues and a higher-than-normal demand for children’s acetaminophen and ibuprofen products have resulted in shortages and suppliers are uncertain when they might be back in stock.
Earlier this week, SickKids Hospital in Toronto circulated a recommendation about accessing these products to parents and caregivers of children. The Toronto Hospital stated that getting a prescription for these medications from their SickKids Doctor would help to ensure access.
Local pharmacies have been fielding questions since this recommendation was circulated. It’s important to note that there has been no change to the legal requirements to obtain these medications and a prescription is NOT required.
However, consumers of these products are being asked to only buy what is needed right now to allow the supply chain to stabilize.
Aaron Nixon, Pharm. D., owner and manager of Main Street Pharmacy located at 200 Main Street East has confirmed that they are monitoring the situation and will keep the public updated on supply availability.
“My team and I are here to help you with correct dosing and alternatives to ensure that your little ones receive the care they need. If you have product for the wrong age at home,” Nixon said.
“If you have an infant product but your child is over the weight on the packaging, please call us and we can advise you on the correct volume of medication to give your child based on their weight. We are also working with our suppliers to obtain large stock bottles that we can provide individual supply from.”
Members of the public who have questions or concerns can contact Aaron or his team at 519-712-8800.
