New Children’s Book Series Tackles Growing Issue of Childhood Anxiety

Last summer while out for a walk, author Lynn McLaughlin called her niece Amber Raymond on a whim.

“Hi hon. How would you like to write a children’s book series with me?”

Amber was just about to graduate with her Master of Social Work degree and, as a lifelong educator, Lynn thought about all of the possibilities they could achieve if working as a team.

Without hesitation Amber agreed, and in no time the two were brainstorming.

Their goal from the beginning, without question, was to give children the tools they need to problem solve and find positive solutions for everyday situations in life.

After over a full year, with the added creativity of talented illustrator Allysa Batin, The Power of Thought book series moved from imagination and planning to reality.

Recent evidence suggests that we are at the core of an anxiety epidemic with roughly 4.4 million (7.1%) of the world’s children diagnosed with anxiety.

This book series provides a teaching resource for parents, educators and others to help support anxious children to manage their concerns and fears.

The Power of Thought children’s book series will help parents and guardians to teach children how to overcome worry and anxiety in a practical, enjoyable way, where every child can find their place.

It will also give children (4-10 years) the tools they need to not only understand and cope with their emotions but to learn how to express themselves properly by using problem-solving strategies.

Overall, they will become better equipped to understand, manage and express their feelings while also developing social and self-regulation skills, empathy and self-confidence.

Meet Zirco, the main character of the children’s book series “The Power of Thought”

Teaching emotional vocabulary gives children the tools they need to build confidence in themselves and minimize their anxiety levels as they grow into adulthood.

In the book series Nyx, Carnuli, Epido, Lazu and Zirco are all children who live on the imaginary planet Tezra, which is made of crystals.

Their forms are quite different from humans as they are not identifiable by gender, and they hover rather than walk.

The most unique characteristic is that the children cannot hide their emotions because they haven’t learned to control them yet. They glow in the colour of how they are feeling.

Each book in the series teaches a different emotional vocabulary as well as a strategy children can use, and adults can model.

Whether you’re a parent, a teacher or an advocate for children’s mental health, this book series will provide you with the necessary tools to teach our youth the emotional literacy needed to navigate and thrive in today’s environment.

The series is available in both French and English.
