Art Scoop: Arts Society of Kingsville Presents Oil & Water

Layne van Loo, Elaine Guitar-van Loo and Ed Roach have teamed up to create the exhibit “Oil & Water” from September 8th to September 27th.

These three established professional artists go back 40 years together. Meeting in Windsor at various artistic events, they stayed in contact and connected at various exhibits and local outdoor art shows.

Layne and Elaine are linked through their art and love to work in detail. Their meticulous and precise painting style in oils and acrylic amazes both peers and patrons. Their art takes hours and sometimes days to complete.

Layne and Elaine are opposite personalities. Layne is quiet and mysterious, while Elaine’s vibrant personality draws you in and she is a natural when she teaches. Layne and Elaine like to paint outdoors in nature known as “en plein air.”

“Plein air painting is trying to capture a moment in time. We like to go out early to catch the morning light that is always a challenge. You get longer shadows in the morning.” said Layne. “Elaine and I will sometimes stand out in the rain and snow — we want to be surrounded by that atmosphere and really capture a true impression of what the scene is.”

Ed’s painting style is much more relaxed. He enjoys the comfort of his studio and a cup of hot tea while painting in his chosen medium:  watercolour. His watercolour technique implies the detail in each canvas.

Ed’s maritime roots are evident in his water scenes. His soft brush strokes easily reproduce the rough waters of the Atlantic’s East Coast or angry skies over the shores of Lake Erie. As a teacher Ed has built a strong following for his watercolour classes, attracting both young and old. His patience and encouragement transforms a novice painter into a confident artist.

A recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s has not stopped his love for his art. He has found that the process of painting diminishes his symptoms and is amazed by how much his body improves physically through art.

Layne, Elaine and Ed are active members of the Arts Society of Kingsville. Their upcoming show “Oil & Water” demonstrates that opposites do attract. In fact those very things, which ordinarily may not mix well together, actually do and combine to create a truly amazing exhibit.

Show dates are from September 8th to September 27th

A “Meet the Artists” opening reception is Thursday, September 9th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Elaine and Layne are organizers of “The Great Migration Paint Out,” a four-day “en plein air” painting competition starting Thursday, October 14, 2021. Artists are invited to showcase their work during live painting demonstrations in conjunction with Kingsville’s Annual Migration Festival.

If you are an artist or interested in trying something new, you can register for The Great Migration Paint-Out.
