Art Scoop: ASK Steps Up With Kids’ Activities, Gallery Show and Classes

A major arts story is continuing to develop in Kingsville!

The Arts Society of Kingsville (ASK) has been collaborating with the town to exhibit and teach on the first floor of the beautiful Carnegie Arts & Visitor Center, 28 Division Street South. We so appreciate the support of the town in undertaking this important revitalization of the Carnegie.

ASK also wishes to extend thanks to the Kingsville Horticultural Society who have created bountiful beauty on the Carnegie grounds. We know the entire community is proud of this beautiful place, inside and out.

Since our “soft” opening in mid-July, ASK has held Saturday Family Fun Activities to support the town’s Open Streets from 4-8 p.m. on Saturdays.

Family Fun Activities

These events will continue throughout the Open Streets schedule until mid-September, offering different hands-on art activities, with all materials free of charge. We welcome everyone to participate!

ASK members are now exhibiting and selling their artwork at the Carnegie. Our next show and sale will run from Wednesday, August 18 through Monday, September 6 featuring The Best of the Arts Society of Kingsville.

This will include original paintings, jewelry, woodwork, pottery, fabric art and more by our talented artists.

At the request of Kingsville’s Recreation Programs and Special Events Manager Karen Loney, ASK members Elaine and Layne van Loo are partnering with children from the Saturday Family Fun Activities to create five picnic table art creations.

Table artwork will include famous paintings, like Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” Mondrian’s geometric and primary coloured art, a Canadian Group of Seven piece of rocks and trees, Hokusai’s “The Great Wave,” and an indigenous Haida depiction of a spiritual turtle. These tables will be on view soon.

*Special thanks to Lily McLeod, a volunteer student from LDHS, who worked on the Van Gogh table.*

ASK will also be scheduling periodic art classes for varying fees at the Carnegie. Currently the following are planned:

– ASK member Ed Roach will hold watercolour classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10-11:30 a.m. and from 1:30-3 p.m. Students need to only bring their own paints. Everything else will be included in the fee. To register, visit www.edroachwatercolours.com

– In September starting on September 10, ASK member Andrea Kubis will hold beginner acrylic classes on Friday nights from 6-8 p.m. All supplies are included. To register, come to the Carnegie.

ASK will host open hours at the Carnegie as follows:

Monday: 10-4
